KID EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Metro West Steelheaders are proud to provide three educational programs for the future anglers. Check out each program below for more information.
Salmon In the Classroom
Salmon In the Classroom (SIC) is a program where teachers are trained by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on how to raise salmon eggs into Fry (small fish). The Fry are then released into a waterway. MWS assist schools and teachers in this program by providing the needed fish tank, filter system and chillers to raise the eggs into Frys in the classroom. Below are pictures of the SIC program.
Kids Fishing Outing
MWS hold an annual fishing day for up to 100 kids every June. On this day, each child receives a free rod & reel and a small tackle box to take home. For many of the kids this is their first time fishing, so MWS members help teach them how to bait hooks, cast and release fish. In addition, a free lunch is provided to the kids and family. Below are pictures of the Kids Fishing Outing.
Crawler Harness Tying
MWS free crawler harness tying program allows kids to make their first fishing lure. A pre tied hook and line is provided to the child, they then select and place the beads and blade on the line. The kids are then encouraged to use the crawler harness and send MWS a picture when they catch a fish with it. Below are pictures of the crawler harness program.
