Please take the time to view the video of the latest Salmon in the Classroom release from this past Saturday!
Matt Lubaway, Roger Hinchcliff, and I all took part in rounding up the lil’ guys for release this past Saturday. It was a fun time, and I had a great time pulling together a video to share the story. I hope you all enjoy, as it was truly a great experience!
We have to extend a huge thanks and gratification to Mrs (Maggie) Sheeran at Novi Middle School. She led her 142 7th grade science students to the rearing and release of 150 Chinook Parr! The students were able to learn of the life cycle of the Chinook first hand, from egg, to fry, parr, and even a couple of the bunch just started to exhibit signs of smolting! Exciting!
MWS has been doing this for many years now, and to the best of my understanding 150 is now the top record to date! Congrats and Kudos to her and her team of students!!!
An additional thanks to Matt for his years of experience leading this effort! You should have seen him, he was like a well-oiled machine, knowing exactly what needs to be done and when! An additional neat fact. Roger mentioned he knew of confirmed returning Chinook on the Clinton. In conversation, I explained that I used to work just up the road from the Yates area, and during a few of my fall steelhead outings after work, I had actually come across some adult salmon swimming around in the river! To the best of my knowledge, the only Salmon being planted into the Clinton River is from the Salmon in the Classroom efforts! Hopefully in another 3 years or so, we will see some of these little guys come back to their native stream! VERY neat!!!!
We will be paying our next visit to the Clinton River this summer for another Clinton River Clean-up. Last year in a joint effort between MWS, MUCC, and CRWC we were able to haul out nearly 500 pounds of trash and debris! I challenge us to top that this year to provide for an ongoing clean ecosystem for our little parr each spring! I will have an announcement on the event later in the year. Stay tuned!
Otherwise, we will look forward to the delivery of the eggs to Mrs Sheeran next fall to start the cycle all over again! I hope to be a part, and filming the action once more!
