I am so excited to tell you about my first fish on a center pin!
I have always had a spinning reel and have never tried a center pin. After hearing about a lot of our members success with it and their wonderful stories, I had to try it for myself. I tried casting with a center pin the first time at our MWS Grand River Tourney, while I was with Dave Novelli and Bob Thomas. I really liked how easy it was to mend the line (vs spinning reel) and how it follows the natural flow of the water. I told Bob I wanted one! I was hooked!
Dave Novelli was kind enough to loan me one of his center pins, and Bob loaned me a rod and away I went! I fished the Muskegon River with two other MWS members, Bob Thomas and Greg Pratt. It was a beautiful day on the river. The sun was shining, the weather was warming up and we didn’t even need hand warmers for a change! I rigged up with a float and beads. After only a couple of casts……FISH ON! It wasn’t a steelhead (which we were fishing for) but a colorful, beautiful brown! I was so excited to get my first fish on the center pin!! Not only did Greg and Bob know about it, but I’m sure everyone else within a mile of us heard my shouts of joy!
I am in the process of purchasing a center pin reel and a 11’ rod. I hope to be back to you with more pictures and great stories of future hook ups with my new center pin!
