The Muskegon River Tournament was held at Newaygo on Sat. the 20th of October. Bob Thomas, Tournament Chairman with the assistance of Phil and Jeff Bustos, hosted a super event. Ten anglers stayed in a house in Newaygo and had a great time cooking great meals and sharing angling experiences. The Platt family joined in the tournament and participated in the weigh-in celebration and dinner. Mark Lewallen won first place with his king salmon. There were 13 river anglers that participated. Twelve of our anglers were on four drift boats to explore this beautiful salmon and trout river.
Jeff Bustos said “… I fished with my brother, Phil, & Dave Strunk on the Muskegon in a rented boat (flat or drift) that worked out great. The trip took us 5-6 hours. We got dropped off and picked up by the rental place (THE PADDLE SHACK). That was great! We saw lots of fish along this stretch got out of the boat and fished also. This looks to be a great place to fish. I am thinking about fishing this river in the winter for steelhead. Looking forward to trying this river again. GET THE NET!”
Henry Nabors comments: “I was impressed that Phil, Jeff and Dave were able to rent a drift boat that was a plain and simple fishing boat with ores and drag-weight system. They knew it had no rod holders and no motor so they came prepared. Dave Skrobot loaned them “Pop’s” small outboard motor; they fixed up some homemade rod holders that attached to the edge of the boat and went Drift Fishing! Wow! It told me that you do not HAVE TO HAVE the very best Drift Boat to do a little Drift fishing. I am now thinking about how my sons, Jonathan and Christopher and I can do a little drift fishing in 2013. Renting a boat works very well as long as you know what you are and are not getting.”
Lenard Pietila added “My little fishing boat worked very well. Dan (crewmember) caught a 10 pound king during our drifting. I did decide my boat needed a name so we called it “The Sieve” because it leaks!”
Mark Lewallen said “I would like to shout out a big Thank You to all my fellow River Fisherman for everything all of you have thought me. MWS Steelheaders Rock!”
Mark Platt said “Watching Cassandra catch two Rainbows and one Brown—PRICELESS, Watching Allison tie into a big King—PRICELESS!!!!! Fishing with two of my daughters on a beautiful day on a fantastic river, can you do better than Priceless??????????? I’m going to try – making plans to go back to the Muskegon with daughter Rachel.”
Henry Nabors said “I signed up for the Muskegon River event as soon as it was announced because I had fished the Muskegon with Dan Keifer in Feb. 2009 and had a blast! The story of that trip took two pages. Fun Time!!! And successful!! Jeff, I am ready to go again!
